Riding for the Disabled (RDA) provides for mobility that is not usually available to the physically challenged, stimulation and enjoyment for all.
There is also the opportunity to develop a relationship with other people is an important exercise in trusting others and encourages the extension of social skills.
RDA is held at the Wanganui Homestead Complex just outside the Shepparton city area and provides participants the opportunity to develop skills that are not readily accessible to people with disabilities. RDA staff provide specially adapted saddles, a mounting ramp and a safe covered area. This provides a physically challenging and enjoyable experience that allows participation in a group activity regardless of physical or intellectual ability. Through this participants have the opportunity to have close contact with the horses which provides stimulation, encourages communication and develops a feeling of trust.
Safety and rider comfort are seen as priorities by the well-trained and professional RDA staff and approved safety helmets are provided by the association. Riders (or carers) are asked to be responsible for the provision of footwear and suitable clothing for the activity. The Riding for the Disabled Association requires that a medical certificate be completed prior to client participation.
